Explaining a Spiritual Experience

By Arlene F. Harder, MA, MFT

The most important thing about any spiritual or peak experience is the experience itself. The second most important thing is the meaning we give to this experience and how the experience itself, and our understanding of it, fits within our beliefs and the perspective we hold of the world. The third most important thing is how we describe our experience to others—even when our ability to explain is limited.

A free verse poem called "Explaining a Spiritual Experience" explores what it is like to be in touch with the deep core of our being as it connects with a greater power than ourselves and what happens when we then attempt to explain our experience to someone else.
