What Is Total Nutrition?

By Jill Place, MA, RD, Nutrition Editor

When I think of the word "nutrition", I think of the cookies and milk I had at recess when I was in kindergarten. Maybe it's because I long for a time when "nutrition" was simple. As you grow older, "nutrition" becomes a complex simmering stewpot of ingredients including:

The foods you choose, why you choose them, and how you eat them

The nutritional supplements you take

Multimedia information about what you're supposed to eat to stay healthy

How you feel about the food you eat

How food relates to the way you feel about your body

What real nourishment means to you

The articles in our Total Nutrition section are about all the forms of nourishment listed above...and more! Our articles are real nourishment for the body, mind, and soul.

For the body, get the recipe for making fast, fun menus with the upcoming section, Recipes for Pure Enjoyment. For the mind, we're going to serve up cutting-edge nutrition information for staying well and healing. We'll also invite you to get savvy about supplements with selections from the book, Supplement Savvy, a Supplement Education System for Registered Dietitians and Supplement Savvy Specialists.

If you overeat or obsess about your size, we're going to help you get away from diets and find your real nourishment with Get Lighter! This multidimensional program helps you heal your food issues with writing, art, guided imagery, and movement.

I'm delighted to be the editor of this section and the creator of much of the material, including the Supplement Savvy system and Get Lighter. Registered Dietitians, therapists skilled in food issues, and other experts in the nutrition field have also contributed articles. If you are a nutrition expert and would like to contribute to this section, please see Guidelines for Contributors to LearningPlaceOnline. You're also welcome to write me at munchnmove@earthlink.net.
