Summer's Gift to Alaska: Bright Flowers

A virtual tour with Arlene F. Harder, MA, MFT

Flowers in potsOn our last day in Alaska, we had some extra time because our plane wasn't leaving until a little later in the day. Therefore, since two of the women in our group were going to stay a few more days on their own and had rented a car, they invited us to join them for a brief tour of Fairbanks, the "Capital of the Interior" and the "Gateway to the North" for those traveling to the Arctic Circle. This is the car to which I refer in the list of vehicles in the index for the virtual tour.

The day before this, we had taken a tour of the University of Alaska Museum and now we returned to the world's northernmost institution of higher learning by visiting the Georgeson Botanical Garden, where they produce spectacular flowers and experiment with the best ways to encourage farming during their short -- but very sunny summer.

The idea of actually seeing the land of the midnight sun was so enticing we almost decided to skip the evening meal with the group the day before and take an Arctic Circle flight. It seemed like a fun idea to get a certificate saying we had been to the land of the midnight sun. But that will have to wait for our next trip to Alaska.

So, folks, that's it. I hope you have enjoyed this tour of Alaska. And I especially hope it has encouraged you to plan a trip of your own. Get out those travel brochures, use the thousands of websites devoted to travel and exploration of places near and far and see as much of the wide, wide world as you can, because none of us is getting any younger.
