Using a Professional Research Service

By Arlene F. Harder, MA, MFT

Any new skill takes time to learn and it will certainly take you a while to learn the ins and outs of using a medical database. So if you don't think you could be patient enough with yourself while you learn, or if you feel you absolutely must have information quickly, having a professional service do it for you can be well worth the money.

Even if you do some of the work yourself, by using this kind of service you can reassure yourself that you've covered the bases as well as possible. Also, there is seldom only one time when you will need to get information about your cancer. So if you've already started on one treatment protocol, you can still look to see if there is something that can be tried later, if it's needed, when the current phase is over.

We have attempted to give you some information on the various individuals and organizations listed below (in alphabetical order), but we recommend you check them all out, at least briefly, before selecting one.

CANHELP

(206) 437-2291

Researches treatment options (including alternative therapies) based on your medical records. A personalized 10-15 page packet will be mailed within 7 working days for $400. For emergency service (2 working days) the cost is $550.

Center for Advancement in Cancer Education

300 E. Lancaster Ave., Suite 100

Wynnewood, PA 19096

(610) 642-4810

This nonprofit cancer information, counseling and referral agency provides resources for cancer prevention and non-toxic approaches as adjuncts or alternatives to conventional cancer treatments. They will give you help over the phone and will not turn you away if you can't afford to make a donation, however, they do ask $70 for an individualized consultation service, which includes a newsletter and other material. For that you won't get the depth of clinical information other services provide, but you may learn how to use nutritional and botanical medicine together with the standard clinical protocol your doctor is recommending, getting the best of both approaches.

The Health Resource, Inc.

(501) 329-5272

(800) 949-0090

This service was established in 1984 as a result of the research Janice Guthrie did for her own rare type of ovarian cancer. Reports on cancer are $375. If you're are not satisfied, you may return the report within 30 days for a full refund.

The Institute for Health and Healing Library (Planetree) To Top of Page

2040 Webster Street

San Francisco, CA 94115

(415) 923-3681

They prepare personalized packets of information, house a medical library that is open to the public, and offer information on both conventional medicine as well as alternative treatments. Their individualized packet is $125 and includes a list of referrals and self-help groups.

Fax: (248) 539-9213

E-mail: dajacob@umich.edu

Dr. Denise Jacob, health information specialist, has a Ph.D. in nursing and extensive experience in health counseling, research and decision-making. The service is for newly diagnosed clients or those who have a chronic illness. Using a personalized approach and extensive research, Dr. Jacob researches and presents information to help clients understand their illness, discover treatment options and work effectively with the health care system. Brooklyn, NY 11217

(718) 636-4433

The reports cost $275 for the report, a two-day priority shipping, update service and monthly telephone hotline.

Schine On-line Services

(800) FIND CURE (346-3287)

schine@findcure.com

When Gary Schine was told there wasn't anything more that could be done for him, he did his own research in 1991 and found a treatment his doctor hadn't known about. He now does extensive research for others both on and off the Internet. The charge is $195 for a 90-300 page report on cancer.
